Whenever a municipality annexes territory, the municipality is required by N.C. G.S. 160A-29, and/or 160A-58.61 to record an accurate map of the annexed territory, a certified copy of the ordinance, and the results of an annexation election, if conducted, with the local register(s) of deeds and the Secretary of State. The documents are required to be filed with the Secretary of State not later than 30 days following the effective date of the annexation ordinance. Failure to file within 30 days does not affect the validity of the annexation.
